Noise Exposure Calculator

Convert noise measurements to 8-hour TWA, percent dose and allowable exposure time under OSHA or NIOSH criteria, with controls guidance when limits are exceeded.

Method

OSHA: 90 dBA PEL, 85 dBA action level, 5 dB exchange rate. NIOSH/ACGIH: 85 dBA limit, 3 dB exchange rate. ACGIH’s TLV matches the NIOSH REL, so the NIOSH selection covers both.

Calculation

8-hour TWA

Measured time-weighted average noise level.

Shift length

Hours worked per shift.

Noise dose

From dosimetry.

Measured level

Sound level at the task.

Task (optional)LevelDurationPartial dose

Partial dose = task duration / time allowed at that level. OSHA: the PEL dose counts only time at 90 dBA or above; the action-level dose counts time at 80 dBA or above. NIOSH: all time counts.
